Thoughts on Trump's Inauguration

I don't like talking about politics. It's just a messy discussion. People get really heated about it, and it's understandable why. Our government has a big hand in our lives. (Personally, I would have loved to see economist Thomas Sowell run for president!)

Yesterday marked the first day of President Trump's tenure in office. A lot of people are upset about it, sure. I wrote a post before talking about Trump's tactics to obtain the presidency, ending that post by offering some hope for his presidency. Because people are upset, I feel the need to reinforce that hope while still being candid about a very specific fear. One that has been largely unmentioned in the news.

The Businessman

He may not have a history in political office, but we all know Trump is a business mogul. Here's the thing about business: it's not easy. Ask any small business owner that. Has he had his failures in business? Sure, but so have most top businessmen. The fact that he has sustained major businesses should be a major credit to him.

Given that much of the government is run like a business, why would we not want a businessman leading us? Granted, he does have a lot more power than a regular businessman, but if Trump hopes to solidify his businesses for his children's sake, he'll put his efforts into pushing government benefits that would help all businesses. And speaking of his children, that brings us to our next section...

The Family Man

I think one of the biggest indicators of a person's character is how he or she interacts with their family. I will definitely write a full post on this point, but in a nutshell, your family is a super intimate relationship that sees the very best and very worst of you.

To Trump's credit, his family has a lot of respect for him. Folks that have been on the show The Apprentice have particularly noted how much respect Ivanka shows for "The Donald". If Trump was really that bad, liberal news networks would definitely have capitalized on any news stories from family bad-mouthing him. That didn't really happen, so I hope you find encouragement in that.

The Fear

I'm frankly not worried for people's rights. I don't worry for my gay friends, nor do I worry about the rights of black people. I believe this is because Trump, as a businessman, understands that you have to make allies in order to push forward your real agenda. This agenda being initiatives to support business, of course.

No, the actual fear comes from a precedent set by now-former President Obama. What largely went swept under the rug is how much Obama abused his executive power to push forward agenda items that should have gone through the traditional powers of Congress. You can argue whether or not Obama's initiatives were good, but this was a very scary precedent to set. And frankly, I do see Trump carrying this new tradition on.

Granted, I don't see Trump using his power to radically wreck the United States, but if we keep this precedent up, we will eventually have a president that does radically abuse power that will throw our nation into turmoil. Will I see it in my lifetime? I don't think so, but as a new dad, I don't want my daughter to live through those times.

Again, I don't think Trump is the ideal candidate, but I don't think he'll be as awful as liberal media and social media makes him out to be. The fact that they’re reaching for stories related to urine shows me they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel to make him look as bad as possible. I truly hope this offers you some encouragement.

It will be an interesting four years, to say the very least.

Key Competency #4: A Dash of "Not-Care-itude"

As an avid listener of The Tim Ferriss Show  podcast, I listened to a recently uploaded episode complementary to his new book Tools of Titans (review incoming) that covered a number of tough questions he encouraged everybody to ask themselves. One of the questions he shared was, "How would you run your business if you were only allowed to work that business two hours a week?"

Five Games to Play While Listening to Podcasts

I'm a big fan of podcasts. I regularly listen to at least two podcasts every day, ranging from business to comedy to video gaming. Speaking of that last one, the best time to listen to podcasts (aside from exercise) is while playing a video game. Now, you can't just play any video game while listening to podcasts because it's just not conducive in every situation. For example, I would never suggest you play something like Call of Duty online while listening to a podcast. All your brainpower will go to the game and zero to the podcast. So when coming up with this list, I held to these couple of criterion for games suitable for simultaneous podcast: Can't be heavily story driven (Looking at you, Telltale Games) Can't be something that involves a ton of strategy Can't can't CAN'T be multiplayer Keeping these criterion in mind, here are five games I'd suggest you check out.

I'm Not the Tech Expert You Think I Am (Top 5)

Amongst my family and friends, and I am known as the tech guru. Any time they have any questions, I'm usually the first guy they call. And it's pretty understandable why: 9 times out of 10, I can help solve their problems. It's kinda weird and doesn't make sense to me. For example, I've been asked numerous times for help with something on Facebook. Um...... I don't have Facebook. (Well, at least, not anymore. I had one from 2008-2011 but haven't had one since.) This isn't to say, however, that I am useless here. In fact, my track record for solving Facebook questions is 100% so far. So what is it about me? As the title of this posts suggests, I'll be the first to raise my hand and tell you that I am not a tech expert. I have no formal training, no formal IT certifications, and only took one computer programming class in high school. So what I hope you learn from this post is what you can apply to become a "tech expert" yourself.

About LYEATT

This is my third attempt at starting a blog like this. Each other time I started, I was so concerned about views. How many people read what I wrote? Did anybody express appreciation over it? Did anybody have any other thoughts to share about it? The truth is, I heard nothing. Seemingly nobody cared! Although… I should say that really didn’t give either much to gain traction. Each maybe had three or four posts before my self-consciousness got the better of me and shut them down. So why now? Why try again?

Decision Fatigue and Five Tips to Avert It

One of the best things about living in Bloomington-Normal is the diversity of restaurant choices we have to choose from. Want one of the big chains? We've probably got it. Nice local restaurants? Yup. Italian, Chinese, American, Thai, and Indian places? Check. Ironically, one of the worst things about living in Bloomington-Normal is, you guessed it, the diversity of restaurant choices we have to choose from.
